Fire Season is a new book from Philip Connors, one of the few hundred remaining fire watchers. They’ve got fire towers back in the Pine Barrens at home, and as a kid I always wondered how far one could see at the top of them. But those were in our little town and scattered throughout the Pine Barrens, all within proximity of society. I first became aware that there were fire watchers isolated from everything except nature upon reading Desolation Angels by Jack Kerouac. They are a defense against the brutalities of nature looking to destroy itself, or man looking to destroy nature as well. Fire Season will be something I’m going to check out because from that sort of reflection there has to be something to come from it, just as Kerouac found things: “I look up, there are the stars, just the same, desolation, and the angels below who don’t know they’re angels.”
